A pinnacle is an architectural device which was also applied to the framing elements of some altarpieces. On buildings pinnacles are small terminations which crown spires and buttresses. They are usually conical or pyramidal in shape. When forming part of the upper registers of altarpieces, pinnacles can be painted and/or gilded.
