Plutarch

Plutarch was a Greek writer who was born in about the year 46 AD, and died after 120 AD. He is famed for his 'Lives', a series of biographies of ancient notables such as philosophers and rulers. He grouped the biographies into pairs - one Greek and one Roman subject - and then drew moral points from the comparison.

The 'Lives' were an important source of subject matter for later artists.
