Saint Dorothy is a Christian martyr who is thought to have been killed in about the year 303.
According to legend she was condemned to death because of her faith during the persecution of Christians by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. She converted two women who had attempted to change her faith. On her way to execution she was mocked by a lawyer who asked her to send him flowers and fruit from heaven; a child miraculously appeared with a basket filled with both. The basket of fruit and flowers became her attribute; see for example the basket she holds in the painting of her by the Master of the Saint Bartholomew Altarpiece in the Collection ('The Virgin and Child with Musical Angels').
