The original tabernacle was the dwelling place of God carried by the wandering Hebrews in the Old Testament. Because of this, in Christianity it is used to describe the container in which the consecrated host is kept. It can also by extension refer to the structures used to enclose and dignify sacred objects and images, such as those commonly found on Italian street corners and in churches.
