The Wynn Ellis Bequest

The Wynn Ellis Bequest was a posthumous gift of paintings made to the National Gallery in 1876 by Wynn Ellis, an entrepreneurial silk merchant and Free Trade Liberal MP. The gift was dominated by Dutch paintings of the 17th century, which considerably strengthened this area of the Collection, but it also included important works by Canaletto.

Dutch painters represented in the bequest include Ruisdael,Jan van de Cappelle, Willem van der Velde, van der Heyden, Schalcken and Nicolaes Berchem.
