The Virgin Mary, Christ's mother, is enthroned as Queen of Heaven. Such representations of her and her son are derived from Byzantine sources. In pictures of this type the mother and child are shown elevated above temporal existence as objects of devotion. If the throne itself is made of architectural elements, it may be intended to refer to the institution of the Church.
