A Torrent at Tivoli
Simon Denis
Denis painted this sketch while visiting the falls at Tivoli, probably in the early 1790s when he also painted the 'View of the Cascades at Tivoli'. Such sketches may have been made as studies for larger paintings or simply as studies for their own sake. Denis captures the effects of the foaming water gushing over rocks, its translucency and the shadows beneath its surface.
