Thomas Jones, 'Landscape with a Distant View of the Sea (Italy)', late 1770s?
About the work
Overview
The generalised features of this broad, sweeping landscape prevent a precise identification of the site, but it is likely to be a sketch made in Italy. According to his 'Memoirs', Jones also made oil studies in his native Wales on three occasions in the 1770s before departing for Italy in 1776. The farm buildings in the middle ground resemble those found in both Italy and Wales.
