National Gallery Podcast – Stories in Colour

Listen to our art podcast, where we uncover the hidden mysteries of colour.

What does colour sound like? How did mauve become the brat green of the Victorians? And why do we think pink is just for girls?

Find out the answers to these questions and many more in the second series of ‘Stories in Colour’.

Once again, Beks is joined by a host of experts who all have unique insights into the hidden mysteries of colour. We travel back to a time when there was a beautiful blue pigment found in Afghan mines that cost more than gold. And fast forward to the present day, to hear about the rivals hunting for the blackest shade of black.

The first episode in series two releases on Wednesday 20 May 2026. Episodes will release weekly, finishing on 8 July 2026.

‘Stories in Colour’ is available on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen to your podcasts.

About Stories in Colour

‘Stories in Colour’ is a podcast from the National Gallery telling the histories of one of the most vibrant and influential technologies. These are the stories of how colour has changed the world.

Hear from curators, scientists, historians, artists, and more experts, to look at humanity’s efforts to make colour and make meaning with it.

Along the way, see – and hear – the National Gallery’s paintings in a whole new spectrum of light.
