Art and Religion: Technical Bulletin Articles

Read National Gallery Technical Bulletin articles which relate to the Art and Religion research theme.

All of the devotional paintings in the National Gallery are now separated from their original contexts and many have naturally altered during the passing of time, or were deliberately transformed by collectors and art dealers before entering the collection.

Aspects of the painting’s original appearance or function may be recovered, however, through technical examinations and treatments made by scientists and conservators at the Gallery.

Using the latest scientific methods and technology these specialists can identify the artistic materials, techniques and structural supports used in a painting and provide insight into how these may have changed, or been modified, over time.

The outcomes of this research are published annually in the National Gallery Technical Bulletin.

Below are a selection of articles from the Technical Bulletin Archive which directly relate to the Art and Religion research theme.
