Description
Letter from Lord D'Abernon to Holmes, 25 Jun 1918 informing him of Otto Gutekunst's intention to leave his 'Portrait of a Man' by Rembrandt and a portrait by Ambrogio de Predis to the Gallery; letter from Holmes to Otto Gutekunst conveying the Trustees' appreciation of his generous intention, 10 Jul 1918; letter from Robert Witt, NACF, 14 Sep 1945 re Gutekunst's proposal to present his 'Portrait of Doge Gritti' by Titian to the Gallery should they purchase his 'Portrait of Conde de Leganez' by Titian with reply, 12 Oct 1945, that the Gallery was not in a position to purchase the Rubens.
The body of material dates from 1947-1956 and concerns the 'Lucrezia Crivelli' by de Predis and 'Doge Andrea Gritti' by Titian given by Mrs Gutekunst to the Gallery in 1947, namely correspondence with Mrs Gutekunst and Dr Hell re delays in the latter's restoration of the de Predis portrait and consequent display in the Gallery. There is also further correspondence between Hendy and Mrs Gutekunst re the Doge Gritti portrait, its doubtful attribution to Titian (advocated by Berenson) and its possible authorship by Catena, and the export stop placed on the sale of her 'Portrait of Conde de Leganez' by Rubens
