Description
Correspondence with E. Beyeler (dealer) relating to which Monet the National Gallery will decide to acquire. It is agreed to show two pictures to the Trustees: Nympheas Huile sur toile (offered for £20,000) and Nirvana jaune Huile sur toile (£55,000). Both pictures come from the private collection of Michel Monet. Letter to Beyeler explaining that funds will now be reduced because an export licence has finally been granted for a Cezanne the Gallery is purchasing [see NG14/208/1]. This reduction in funds means that both Monets can no longer be purchased. Letter asks if Beyeler would be willing to sell the Nirvana Jaune for £50,000. Letter from Beyeler stating that he can not sell the Nirvana Jaune for any less than £55,000. Letter from Hendy to Ronald Harris (Treasury) asking for special grant to purchase the Monet. Letter from Harris agreeing to provide a special grant for the purchase, but not for the full price. Letter to Beyeler confirming that payment of £55,000 will be made for the picture, with £20,000 initially paid followed by the remaining £35,000 dated 6 May 1963. Letter from accountant confirming payment of initial £20,000 dated 15 May 1963.
