Description
Correspondence between the National Art Collections Fund and the National Gallery regarding the NACF offer to present their recently acquired Vittoria bust to the Gallery. The offer is accepted by the Gallery, but matters are then complicated by the suggestion that the sculpture is a fake, and dates from the 19th century rather than the 16th as originally supposed. Letter from John Pope-Hennessy to Cecil Gould arguing that the sculpture is not genuine, with correspondence between NACF, National Gallery and Trustees discussing the implications of this suggestion. Letter from Philip Hendy to the Earl of Crawford (Chairman of NACF) explaining that the Gallery would very much like to accept the bust, as it is still of considerable beauty and interest despite the fact it is a forgery. The NACF accept this arrangement.
