Description
Correspondence between Philip Hendy and Cesar de Hawke (dealer negotiating sale) regarding the potential acquisition of the Cezanne, which is being offered for sale by the Lecomte family. Initially Hendy suggests acquiring two other pictures rather than the Bathers due to the various complexities associated with purchasing the work, de Hawke explains that the Lecomte family are only willing to sell the Bathers however. The Lecomte family will negotiate with the French authorities in order to acquire an export permit and it will be made clear that the National Gallery gives the Louvre priority should the Louvre wish to purchase the work. Letter from Hendy to Chatelain, Director of the Louvre, explaining that the Trustees of the National Gallery would not want to purchase the Cezanne if the Lourve wished to acquire the work, as it is of such significance to French art history. A list of the Cezanne works owned by the Lecomte family sent to Hendy from de Hawke; notes on the condition of the Cezanne; arrangements for a visit to Paris in order to view the picture; arrangements for the transportation of the picture to London; letter from Hendy to de Hauke confirming the safe arrival of the picture; reports to Trustees on the picture.
