Description
Upon his death in 1894, Austen Henry Layard bequeathed to the National Gallery his collection of pictures, other than portraits, in which Lady Layard held a life interest. Lady Layard died in 1912, and a selection of his pictures in London were accepted by the Trustees in 1913 [NG2946-2956]. However, the pictures from Venice were not incorporated into the National Gallery until 1916, due to export difficulties and a legal dispute with Major Arthur Layard re the testator's intentions with regard to the disposal of portraits.
