Description
Correspondence between Clark [Director], Sir Evan Charteris, Lord Duveen and Benjamin Guinness re the acquisition of the Sassetta panels and in particular the latter's inital offer to purchase the panels from Mr Mackay to bequeath to the NG, the Board's subsequent decision to purchase the panels with the aid of contributions from the NACF, Lord Bearsted and Guinness and re Lord Duveen's unauthorised but successful offer of £49,000 made for their purchase despite a deficit in contributions. This file also includes correspondence with the Treasury Solicitor, Jul 1936, as to whether the Gallery remained under any legal obligation to remit the money owing to Duveen from the purchase
