Description
Director 1934-1945. Series of files containing Clark's correspondence when at the Gallery, and correspondence of the Keeper with Clark when Clark was abroad or away from the Gallery. The correspondence relates mostly to practical and everyday administrative issues, rather than strategy or policy.
Also includes files on Clark's role as editor of the Penguin Modern painters series:
In 1942 the Chief Executive of Penguin Books, Allan Lane, approached Clark and proposed series on modern British artists. Clark's focus on the promotion of art and culture during the war and his keen interest in the maintenance and development of young British artists lead him to agree to edit the series. Penguin's aim was to produce a high quality, yet affordable series with numerous colour plates despite wartime restrictions.
