Photograph of a painting by Bertha Garnett, signed and dated 1883. Oil on canvas. 25.5 x 36 cm. Original: National Gallery History Collection (H47). Inherited by the artist's nephew Hubert Thorne and presented by his daughters Ursula Thorne and Margery Holroyd, 1979. Exhibited in 'Palaces of Art: Art Galleries in Britain, 1790-1990' Dulwich and National Gallery of Scotland, 1991-92 C12. This picture probably shows the north-west corner of Room VI (vestibule), see 'Pictorial Notes in the National Gallery: The British School' by H. Blackburn, 1877 p. 60. Some of the pictures are different but nos. 294, 503, 524 and 516 appear to be hanging as in 1877, before the Turner Room was moved. Garnett's picture includes 'Ulysses deriding Polyphemus' (NG508), 'Snowstorm: Hannibal crossing the Alps' (NG490), 'The Fighting Temeraire' (NG524) and 'Harold's Pilgrimage' (NG516).
