Description
Enclosing a copy of a letter from Mr Gladstone to Mr George Howard who was a Trustee of the Gallery, who communicated its contents to the Board. The enclosed letter is included and concerns the Governments decision to decline the Blenheim pictures, offered for sale with the exception of Raphael's 'The Ansidei Madonna' and van Dyck's portrait of Charles I and a Rubens, authorising the Trustees to make an offer of £70,000 for the Raphael or £100,000 for the three pictures
