Description
Requesting the restoration of the annual grant, suspended since 1884. The Board argue that this will prevent 'embarrassing questions as to the importance of works of art' by allowing the Director to exercise his responsibility over the purchase of paintings. They lament that many painting by important British artists, hitherto held in private houses rather than the National Gallery, are sold to Europe or America when they come on the market since the Gallery does not have the funds to bid for them.
