Administrative history
The papers relate to the acquisition of modern French paintings for the collection of Charles-Ferdinand d'Artois, Duc de Berry (1778-1820) and had been tipped into a copy of Féréol Bonnemaison and Dominique Vivant-Denon's 'Galerie de son Altesse Royale Madame la duchesse de Berry. Écoles françaises. Peintres modernes. Ouvrage dedié à son altesse royale et lithographié par d'habiles artistes sous la direction de M. le Chevalier Bonnemaison', 2 vols (Paris, Didot l'aîné, 1822-1828), which was purchased for the National Gallery Library.
Following the Duc de Berry's assassination in 1820, the duchess continued to expand the collection, bringing it to about 120 pieces. It was renamed "Galerie de son Altesse Royale Madame duchesse de Berry" and exhibited at the Tuileries. The catalogue belonged to Charles Cuchetet, general commissioner of the house of H.R.H. Madame la duchesse de Berry.
