Description
The registers record details of works offered to the National Gallery. Each volume contains some or all of the following information: date of offer; the name of the person making the offer; address of owner; subject of picture; supposed painter; size and price; decision of the Gallery; date of reply; and general remarks. Each volume has an index to the names of those making the offer.

Between 1878 and 1920 the National Gallery kept a register of all works offered to it for sale by members of the public.
Custodial history
The registers were created by the National Gallery and are now held in the Gallery's Archive.
