Administrative history

The Government purchased the Hampton Site (the location of the Sainsbury Wing) in 1958. Towards the end of that year the Sunday Times launched an architectural competition for the design of an extension to the National Gallery on the Hampton Site. Although it was recognised that the winning design would not be built, the competition aimed to stimulate debate about the form which any development on the site should take. The comeptition entries were assessed by Professor Sir William Holford, Peter Chamberlin and William Allen. The first prize of £2,500 was awarded to Barrie Dewhurst; second prize of £1,000 went to Boissevain & Osmond; third prize of £500 to I.H. Marshall; and two fourth prizes of £300 each to Mervyn Handley and William Crabtree.

Custodial history

It is not known when the exhibition panels were deposited in the National Gallery Archive.
