Description

The papers consist of three distinct series:
1. Correspondence relating to Lord Overstone's gift of Giulio Romano and Gianfrancesco Penni, 'Saint Mary Magdalene borne by angels' (NG225) in 1852;
2. A volume entitled 'National Gallery' with the Overstone crest and motto affixed to the inside front cover. The volume containes National Gallery annual returns (1860-1866) and correspondence between Lord Overstone and Charles Eastlake (1848-1854);
3. Correspondence between Charles Holmes and Lady Wantage regarding the evacuation of certain pictures from the National Gallery to Overstone Park, Northampton in 1918.

Administrative history

Samuel Jones Loyd was born on 25 Sep 1796. A career in banking saw Loyd become one of the wealthiest men in Britain. He was appointed a trustee of the National Gallery on 13 Aug 1850 and remained in post until 1871. In 1852 he presented the Gallery with the work by Giulio Romano and Gianfrancesco Penni, 'Saint Mary Magdalene borne by angels' (NG225). On 5 Mar 1860 he was created Baron Overstone of Overstone and Fotheringay. Lord Overstone died on 17 Nov 1883.

Custodial history

The papers were donated to the National Gallery by Christopher Larch Loyd. They were delivered to the Gallery by Francis Russell, acting on Mr Loyd's behalf, on 13 Feb 2007.
