Description
These volumes cover the daily transactions handled by the Manchester branch between 3 Oct 1898 and its closure on 24 Mar 1932 (following which all business was moved to London, Bond Street). Entries cover a range of transactions including sales, purchase of materials, restoration, re-framing, conveyances and hanging time. The information included within each Day Book entry includes:
- Date
- Name of account holder
- Credit or Debit sign
- Description of transaction
- Associated Stock, On Sale or Waiting Order number
- Amount
- Sheet numbers: references to receipts, invoices or correspondence (not retained by Agnew's)
- Associated Ledger page number and occasionally the prefix indicating Ledger series (not all ledger series referenced have been retained within the archive)
Notes:
- It is not know why the Manchester Day Books start in 1898; the branch was in operation throughout the 19th century (dating back to Thomas Agnew's apprenticeship to Vittore Zanetti). It seems that in 1898 there was a major rearrangment of the records used by the dealership, as the Manchester and S Ledger series also date from this year.
