Copies of Reproduction of Gainsborough's Duchess of Devonshire and related documentation

The following records were photographed and copies of the photos are contained within this folder, as follows:

- The first page of a letter (6 Mar 1877) written by the thieves of the Duchess to the firm, discussing continuation of communication, and delivery of a second piece of the picture as proof;
- The Reward Poster (£1000) for information re the stolen painting, translated into German (2 copies);
- The Reward Poster (25,000 francs) for information re the stolen painting, translated into French and including annotations noting the mistakes made by Scotland Yard;
- The first page of a letter (15 Dec 1876) written by the thieves of the Duchess to the firm, notifying them of its safe arrival in America, enclosing a fragment of the painting, and demands on future communication;
- The first page of a letter (22 Feb 1877) written by the thieves of the Duchess to the firm, providing them with a longer piece of the upper part of the picture and a request to insert an advertisement in the Times by way of response;
- Press cuttings re the Lost Gainsborough;
- A small mounted copy of the "Duchess of Devonshire", photographed by Henry Graves & Co. A reward for information is advertised on the back;
- A mounted copy of the "Duchess of Devonshire", coloured after the original (if required) and photographed by Henry Graves & Co. A reward for information is advertised on the back;
- The "Duchess of Devonshire", copied from "Frontispiece to Morgan Catalogue", photographed by A.C. Cooper & Sons;
- The "Duchess of Devonshire", with W.O. Morgan noted on the back, photographed by Sydney Newbury;
- An article, "Engravings and the art market: The leg-less Duchess" giving a brief history of the painting, and including a two engravings (1870 and 1890) showing the composition before and after the lower section was removed.
