Following the success of his monograph on Rogier van der Weyden, Davies began work on a similar project concerning the painter Lippo Lippi. After his retirement from the National Gallery in 1973, Davies was able to devote almost all his time towards the project. He continued to work on the monograph until his death in 1975. The Lippo Lippi monograph was never published.
