Between 1920 and 1939 Kay carried out research into Spanish painting. He signed a publishing contract with the Medici Society in 1934. Sixteen chapters were planned, covering the history of Spanish painting from the Romanesque to the Modern era. In a letter to David Piper (see acquisition file), Ellis Waterhouse says that the Medici Society's 'American reader complained about metaphors derived from cricket and other trivia and it was never published'.
