Description
Robertson collected autograph letters and ephemera relating to the Eastlakes in the course of researching his book and retained an interest in the trade in Eastlake manuscripts post-publication (see NGA58/2/51). Several files include his research notes relating to the letters, and correspondence with the booksellers and manuscript dealers from whom he acquired the them; there is related correspondence files in NGA58/2.
The letters (thirty-seven by Charles Eastlake and one by Elizabeth Eastlake) have been arranged in alphabetical order and cover a range of subject matter including art history, publications, exhibitions, professional and social engagements. There is one admission ticket to an exhibition of cartoons in Westminster Hall signed by Eastlake; a ticket to the Royal Academy, also signed by Eastlake, was not located at the time of acquisition.
