Abstract
The two panels formed the central portion of an altarpiece of Saint Catherine of Alexandria (c.1502), whose side panels still exist in other collections. A 17th-century engraving of the complete altarpiece and an 18th-century copy in oil of the lower central panel were compared with the surviving panels during a detailed technical examination.
The treatment proposal for restoration following cleaning and removal of old retouching included a photomontage of an extension of the surviving frame back to its original dimensions, and a reconstruction of the original ceiling around Saint Catherine's head, to restore the architectural space in the central image. This has now been carried out. The reversible modifications to the frame are discussed in some detail.
