The Technique and Restoration of Cima's 'The Incredulity of S. Thomas'

Abstract

This second part (continued from Vol. 9) of an account of the restoration of The Incredulity of Saint Thomas by Cima da Conegliano is a detailed survey of the materials and techniques used to make the altarpiece. Some 60 samples of paint were studied in cross-section and analyzed by spectrographic laser microprobe, X-ray diffraction, gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and high performance liquid chromatography. Support, ground, underdrawing, and medium are discussed in addition to the pigments.
