Technical Bulletin Volume 14, 1993
Abstract
The underdrawing of the Garvagh Madonna is discussed in detail, and compared with other works by Raphael. Here, it appears to be direct, not pounced, and is very fine and delicate. It may have been executed in metal point or very hard black chalk, but the excellent condition of the painting precluded sampling.
