Le Sueur was born and died in Paris. He was a pupil of Vouet, with whom some of his earlier works have been confused. He was influenced by Poussin, among other French painters, and by Italian pictures which he studied in Paris. His reputation was established - both in his lifetime and thereafter - by his series of 22 paintings on the life of Saint Bruno executed in the years 1645-8 for the Paris Carthusians.
