Gabriel Revel was a pupil of Charles Le Brun and assisted him in the decoration of Versailles. He became a member of the Academy in 1683 and in 1685 was commissioned to paint the ceiling of the Library of the Palais de Justice, Dijon. Revel was a history painter as well as a portraitist.
