Baptised in Amsterdam in November 1629, van Ludick was a landscape painter in the manner of Jan Both. His father was a merchant and art dealer who was acquainted with a number of artists, including Rembrandt.
In 1672 van Ludick was one of the artists (Vermeer was another) asked to adjudicate in a dispute over the authenticity of a group of paintings sold by Hendrick van Uylenburch to the Elector of Brandenburg.
