Simone dei Crocefissi was a dominant presence in Bolognese art in the 14th century. A hugely prolific artist, 70 of his works still survive today.
Simone was probably a pupil of Jacopo di Scannabecchi di Dalmasio who was married to his sister. He associated with Vitale da Bologna and the illuminator Niccolo di Giacomo da Bologna.
His nickname was derived from four crucifixes which he completed in the latter part of his career.
