New Perspectives

Our 'New Perspectives' film series brings to light new angles on Lucian Freud's work, looking beyond his fame and infamy, and focussing on the artist's uncompromising commitment to painting in the 20th century.

In this film, Dr Gregory Salter from the University of Birmingham, considers Freud’s paintings of gay men, performer Leigh Bowery, and Sue Tilley – the subject of Freud’s famous ‘Benefits Supervisor’ series – in the context of British queer and political history in the 1980s and 90s.
