The Keeper of Paintings and the Mischievous Masterpieces  Privacy Notice Child-friendly

This section contains the Privacy Notice for The Keeper of Paintings and the Mischievous Masterpieces written for children to read.

We are the National Gallery, and we hold a national collection of paintings in London.

We organise Art Road Trip, a travelling art studio visiting places across the UK in 2024 and 2025.

We created the Keeper of Paintings and the Mischievous Masterpieces App for children between 7 and 11 to use as part of Art Road Trip.

The App allows you to create your own version of paintings held in the Gallery on a tablet provided by the Gallery, or on your parents’ or guardians’ tablet or phone. You can use the App to submit your painting to the Gallery and we might display it in the Gallery or on our website or social media channels.

This Privacy Notice tells you how we use your personal data, so you know what happens when you give it to us.

You might want to read it with an adult to help you understand what we do!

Anything that can be used to identify you is your personal data. This could be things like your name or a photo of you, but it is also things like your email address or your home address.

We don’t need your personal data! In fact, we ask you not to give us any personal data when you send your painting to the Gallery. Please invent your Artist Nickname and your Painting Name, and if you take a photo of yourself or someone else, cover your photo in paint!

To make sure you don’t send us personal data, we want your parents (or guardians) to give their consent to the submission of your painting. If your parents (or guardians) are not there, you will need to ask an Art Road Trip facilitator to check everything’s ok before you submit your artwork.

If ever you do send us personal data, we will delete it or delete all things that can identify you.

Can anyone else see my personal data?

The company which built the App will be able to see your artwork too after you send it and to see the personal data you might’ve left in it. Like us, they are very careful and will not let anyone else see it.

Do you keep other personal data from me?

If you contact us about anything regarding the App, by email or phone for example, we will know your name and email address or phone number. We might need to keep this information to answer to your queries. We are allowed to keep them only for as long as we need it.

You have ‘rights’ when we use your data. Your first right is to know what we do with it, that’s why we have created this privacy notice.

You can ask us to tell you what personal data we have about you, or you can tell us to stop using it or delete it. If your personal data is wrong or incorrect, you can tell us and we will fix it.

Who makes sure my personal data is safe?

Someone here at the Gallery makes sure we protect your data. He is called our Data Protection Officer; his name is Richard Barnett. If he sees something wrong, he will tell us how we can fix it. If you are worried about something, please contact him: dataprotection@nationalgallery.org.uk
