Correspondence with Lionel Cust, Lord Curzon, Lord Bessborough [trustee of Layard's will], R.H. Benson and Sir Rennell Rodd, British Ambassador in Rome re arrangements for taking custody of the Layard pictures at Ca' Capello, Venice following Lady Layard's death, the Italian government's reluctance to allow the export of the pictures and Major Layard's claim to the portraits. Occasional references are made to a picture by Antonello da Messina [NG3121] which was refused export by the Italian government in 1904. Also included is a list of the 67 Layard pictures taken into the temporary custody of the Correr Museum, Venice; the Director's notes on the bequest; and a letter from Benson describing provenance of NG3099.
